Art·Science Symposium

How Are Ideas Born? Creativity in Art and Science in the Age of AI

“How Are Ideas Born? Creativity in Art and Science in the Age of AI” is a one-day symposium taking place on 11 December 2026 in Copenhagen, hosted by the Niels Bohr Institute. In a time in which humans seem to rely on AI to write texts, create new visuals and moving images and to conduct academic research, the symposium wants to reflect on what constitute a creative process, namely ideas. Bringing together artists, scientists, anthropologists, physicians, and humanists, the event explores the nature of creativity across disciplines: how great ideas emerge, how working across boundaries can generate new knowledge, and how human creativity can be enhanced rather than displaced in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. The programme has four sessions: creators reflecting on their own creative journeys; voices from transdisciplinary careers; a conversation on AI and the creative process; and a forward-looking panel on the future of research and mentoring. Confirmed speakers include physicist Vítor Cardoso (Niels Bohr Institute and Instituto Superior Técnico), artist Ana Sousa Carvalho, art historian Jennifer Roberts (Harvard University), anthropologist Andreas Roepstorff (Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies), interaction design researcher Peter Dalsgaard (Aarhus University), artist Cecilie Waagner Falkenstrøm, and writer Monia Sander Haj-Mohamed (University of Copenhagen), among others. Abstract submissions and registrations are currently open.

The symposium is co-organised in collaboration between the University of Copenhagen and Yonder Art•Science Niels Bohr Institute and supported by Augustinus Fonden as part of Yonder's 2026 program. View the programme and register here

Yonder | Art•Science | Niels Bohr Institute is a program conceived as a playground for discovery – a place “out there” in the far distance, where artistic and scientific methodologies intersect. Through dialogue and experimental methodologies that combine scientific inquiry with aesthetic imagination, Yonder fosters hybrid forms of research and co-creation that challenge the boundaries of accustomed knowledge, both in science – particularly physics – and art.

Yonder | Art•Science | Niels Bohr Institute program for 2026 is generously supported by Villum Fonden and Augustinus Fonden.
